What Electric Heavy Vehicles Mean for Truck Insurance

Charging, batteries and repair delays are becoming part of the risk conversation

Recent transport and fleet industry coverage continues to point to a steady increase in electric and low-emission heavy vehicles across Australian logistics operations.
For many operators, the attraction is clear: quieter vehicles, lower tailpipe emissions, potential fuel savings and stronger alignment with customer sustainability targets.
But the insurance conversation is now becoming more detailed than simply replacing a diesel truck with an electric one.

Battery-electric trucks introduce different risk questions for insurers, fleet managers and owner-operators. A vehicle’s battery pack can represent a substantial share of its value, and damage assessment may require specialist knowledge. Even a relatively contained impact can raise questions about battery integrity, safe storage, diagnostics and whether a repairer has the equipment and training to return the truck to service. That can affect both claim cost and downtime.

Charging infrastructure is another important part of the picture. Depot chargers, cabling, switchboards, solar integration and energy management systems may sit outside a standard vehicle policy. If a charging fault damages a truck, interrupts operations or affects neighbouring property, operators need to understand which policy responds and whether any exclusions apply. This is especially relevant for businesses running multiple vehicles from one site, where a charging issue could disrupt more than one route or customer contract.

The shift also changes how businesses should think about sums insured. Electric trucks, specialised bodies, battery warranties, software systems and charging assets may need to be recorded clearly. Underinsurance can become a real issue if replacement values move quickly or if imported components are difficult to source. For operators reviewing their fleet, calculating realistic replacement values should be part of the renewal process, not an afterthought after a claim.

Downtime cover also deserves close attention. If an electric truck is off the road, the delay may not be limited to panel repairs. Battery diagnostics, manufacturer approvals, parts availability and limited repair networks can extend the time before a vehicle returns to work. A policy that looked adequate for a conventional truck may not provide the same practical protection if replacement hire vehicles are hard to source.

For transport operators, the practical takeaway is to treat electrification as a full risk review. Before adding electric vehicles, check how your policy treats batteries, chargers, accessories, cyber-enabled systems, towing, storage, fire response and business interruption. It is also worth taking time to compare cover options so the insurance structure keeps pace with the way the fleet is changing.

Recent transport and insurance industry attention on lithium-ion battery safety is a timely warning for Australian truck operators. The issue is no longer limited to consumer products catching fire in homes or warehouses. Australia’s latest seasonal bushfire outlook is a practical reminder that fire risk is not confined to the height of summer. For many farms, the exposure begins well before a catastrophic fire day is declared, as grass growth, drying winds, stored fodder, machinery movement and access limitations combine to create a more complex risk profile than a standard rural home policy can address. - read more
