Storm Season Reminder: Why Tradies Should Check Their Insurance Now

Severe weather can turn a routine job week into a costly business interruption

Storm Season Reminder: Why Tradies Should Check Their Insurance Now?w=400

The latest catastrophe-focused commentary from Australia’s general insurance sector has arrived with a practical warning for trade businesses: severe weather is no longer a once-in-a-while planning issue.
Storms, floods, hail, bushfire and damaging winds are continuing to influence claims volumes, repair costs, underwriting appetite and premium pressure across the market.

For Australian tradies, that matters well before a claim is lodged. A carpenter with tools stored in a ute, an electrician working across multiple sites, a plumber holding materials at a client’s property or a small builder operating from a shed can all be exposed when weather turns quickly. Damage to a vehicle, stolen or water-affected tools, ruined stock, temporary site shutdowns and client property damage can create immediate cash flow stress.

The key lesson is that weather resilience and insurance reviews should sit together. Insurers are paying closer attention to where assets are kept, how they are secured, whether premises are exposed to flood or stormwater, and whether risk controls are realistic. A policy that looked adequate when it was arranged may no longer match the replacement cost of tools, machinery, materials or workshop contents.

Tradies should use this period before peak storm activity to check several practical areas:

  • whether tools and portable equipment are covered in vehicles, on site and in storage;
  • whether commercial motor cover reflects how work vehicles are actually used;
  • whether stock, materials and machinery values are current;
  • whether public liability arrangements respond to accidental damage linked to work activity;
  • whether policy exclusions apply to flood, gradual water damage, unsecured items or unattended vehicles.

Underinsurance remains one of the biggest traps. Replacement prices for tools, generators, compressors, trailers and specialised equipment can move faster than expected, particularly when many businesses are trying to replace damaged assets after the same weather event. Establishing realistic insurance sums insured can help reduce the risk of discovering a shortfall only after a loss.

There is also an operational side. Keeping tool inventories, serial numbers, photos, purchase records and maintenance details up to date can make claims easier to support. Simple steps such as elevated storage, secure lock-ups, stormwater checks, vehicle parking decisions and written site procedures may also help demonstrate that a business takes risk management seriously.

The broader message is not that every tradie needs more cover. It is that cover should be matched to current work patterns, asset values and weather exposure. With severe weather increasingly part of normal business planning, an annual renewal check may not be enough for trade businesses that rely on vehicles, tools and job sites to keep income moving.

APRA’s latest quarterly general insurance statistics point to a market that is still under cost pressure, even as insurers continue to report stronger overall results than during the worst of the recent claims cycle. For Australian tradespeople, the headline is not simply whether insurers are profitable. Australia’s financial advice reform agenda has taken another important step, with industry attention turning to how simpler, more accessible guidance could help consumers make better decisions about insurance. Recent transport and insurance industry attention on lithium-ion battery safety is a timely warning for Australian truck operators. The issue is no longer limited to consumer products catching fire in homes or warehouses. Batteries now move through freight networks in tools, scooters, e-bikes, electronics, spare parts and energy storage equipment, and that creates a different risk profile for carriers, depots and subcontracted linehaul work. - read more

Seasonal Bushfire Risk Puts Farm Cover Back in the Spotlight

Australia’s latest seasonal bushfire outlook is a practical reminder that fire risk is not confined to the height of summer. For many farms, the exposure begins well before a catastrophic fire day is declared, as grass growth, drying winds, stored fodder, machinery movement and access limitations combine to create a more complex risk profile than a standard rural home policy can address. - read more
