Advice Reform Debate Puts Key Person Cover in Focus

Why clearer guidance could matter for Australian businesses

Advice Reform Debate Puts Key Person Cover in Focus?w=400

Australia’s life insurance sector is again focusing on the advice gap, with industry bodies and policy participants continuing to press for reforms that could make practical insurance guidance easier for consumers and businesses to access.
The debate sits within the Federal Government’s broader financial advice reform agenda and is particularly relevant for business owners who need cover that is both affordable and properly structured.

For many small and medium-sized businesses, key person insurance is not a simple off-the-shelf purchase. The right arrangement may depend on the role of the insured person, the company’s debt exposure, profit reliance, ownership structure, tax purpose and succession plans. Yet many business owners only seek help once a lender, investor or accountant raises the issue, often when time is limited and premiums feel like another cost pressure.

The current reform discussion is not about removing consumer protections. Rather, it is about whether more Australians can receive helpful, fit-for-purpose guidance without facing the cost and complexity of full personal advice in every situation. If implemented carefully, that could support better conversations about life, total and permanent disability, trauma and income-style protection, including where these covers are used to protect a business rather than a household alone.

For key person cover, access to clearer guidance could make a real difference. A policy can look competitive on premium alone but still leave gaps if the sum insured is too low, the policy ownership is unsuitable, exclusions are poorly understood or the claims evidence does not match the business purpose. Conversely, overestimating cover can make premiums harder to sustain, increasing the risk that protection lapses before it is needed.

Business owners should treat the advice debate as a reminder to review the fundamentals now. Identify which people the business genuinely depends on, how long disruption could last, what revenue or client relationships may be at risk, and what debts or guarantees would need support. From there, it becomes easier to estimate an appropriate sum insured and decide whether professional assistance is needed.

The broader message is practical: reforms may improve access to guidance, but they will not replace careful planning. Key person insurance works best when it is reviewed alongside business continuity, shareholder agreements, loan obligations and recruitment realities. As the advice framework evolves, Australian businesses have an opportunity to make cover more understandable, more resilient and better aligned with the risks they are actually trying to manage.
