Why lithium-ion batteries are now a business insurance issue

Charging practices, stock storage and policy conditions deserve a closer look

Lithium-ion batteries are moving from a workplace convenience to a serious insurance consideration for Australian small and medium businesses.
As more businesses rely on rechargeable tools, e-bikes, scooters, point-of-sale devices, backup power units and portable electronics, insurers are paying closer attention to how those items are stored, charged and managed.

The concern is not simply that batteries can fail. It is that a single overheating battery can trigger a fast-moving fire, damage stock and equipment, shut down premises and expose the business to third-party claims. Retailers selling battery-powered products, trades using cordless equipment, warehouses holding imported devices, cafés offering charging points and delivery businesses operating e-bikes all face slightly different risk profiles.

For business owners, the practical issue is whether existing cover would respond as expected. Property insurance may be relevant if a fire damages premises, contents or stock, but claim outcomes can depend on policy wording, exclusions, maintenance obligations and whether reasonable precautions were followed. If trading stops after a covered fire, business interruption insurance may become just as important as replacing physical assets.

Liability also deserves attention. If a product supplied by a business causes injury or property damage, product liability and public liability sections may be tested. If a customer, contractor or neighbouring tenant is affected, documentation around sourcing, safety checks, instructions and incident response can become important. Businesses importing or rebranding battery-powered goods should be especially careful, as they may carry responsibilities that go beyond ordinary retailing.

Risk management is likely to matter more at renewal. Insurers and underwriters may ask where batteries are charged, whether charging occurs overnight, how damaged batteries are isolated, whether chargers are genuine or compliant, and whether staff know what to do if a device starts smoking, swelling or overheating. A simple checklist can help identify weak spots before an insurer, landlord or customer asks difficult questions.

SMEs should also review sums insured. A battery-related fire can destroy more than the device itself, including fit-out, stock, electronics, tools and records. Businesses can use estimate sums insured as a starting point, then test whether replacement values, peak stock levels and realistic recovery timeframes are reflected in their policy.

The broader message is clear: battery risk is now part of everyday business risk. Good charging habits, safe storage, supplier due diligence and accurate insurance settings can reduce the chance that a small device becomes a major financial disruption.
