A recent report backed by the National Transport Insurance (NTI) has shed light on the predominant causes of major truck accidents in Australia, revealing that human error remains the leading factor.
The findings underscore the critical need for enhanced safety measures and driver training within the transport industry.

The report indicates that incidents resulting from human factors occurred at a rate of 69.9 per 10,000 heavy vehicles. Notably, inattention and distraction accounted for nearly one-third of these incidents, highlighting the significant impact of driver focus on road safety.

In addition to inattention, inadequate following distances and inappropriate speed were identified as major contributors, collectively accounting for 60.9% of all human factor-related incidents. These statistics emphasize the importance of adherence to safe driving practices and the potential consequences of lapses in judgment or concentration.

The data, derived from NTI's claims records and public information, focuses on major loss incidents with claim costs exceeding $50,000. In the past year, there were 1,767 such claims, marking an 8.3% increase from the previous year. This upward trend signals a pressing need for the industry to address the root causes of these accidents.

Janelle Greene, CEO of NTI, highlighted the challenges faced by heavy vehicle drivers, noting that they operate in one of Australia's most hazardous occupations. Drivers contend with unpredictable factors such as varying road conditions, environmental elements, and the complexities associated with different load types.

For transport business owners and fleet managers, these findings serve as a call to action to invest in comprehensive driver training programs, implement strict adherence to safety protocols, and leverage technology to monitor and improve driver behavior. By proactively addressing these human factors, the industry can work towards reducing the incidence of major truck accidents and enhancing overall road safety.
