Why genetic testing reform matters for partnership life cover

A fairer underwriting approach may still require careful planning

Why genetic testing reform matters for partnership life cover?w=400

The information on this website is general in nature and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation, or needs. Consider seeking personal advice from a licensed adviser before acting on any information.

Australia’s move towards restricting how life insurers use genetic test results is an important development for people who have delayed testing, treatment or insurance conversations because of privacy and affordability concerns.
The reform is intended to reduce the risk that someone is discouraged from taking a clinically useful genetic test because they fear it may later affect their ability to obtain life, total and permanent disability, trauma or income protection cover.

For business partners, the issue is more than personal. Partnership life insurance often underpins buy-sell agreements, debt protection and continuity planning. If one partner dies, becomes seriously ill or is permanently unable to work, the right insurance structure can help fund an ownership transfer, reduce pressure on cash flow and support both the business and affected families.

The proposed direction is a positive signal for fairness, particularly for Australians with a known family history of inherited conditions. However, it should not be read as a reason to delay reviewing cover. Underwriting still considers a broad range of information, including current health, diagnosed conditions, occupation, lifestyle, sums insured and policy type. Insurers may also apply exclusions, loadings or further evidence requirements depending on the application.

That means partners should focus on the practical details. Existing policies may have different terms from new cover. Cover held inside superannuation may not match the needs of a business succession plan. Ownership, beneficiary nominations and buy-sell documentation can also determine whether a payout reaches the right party at the right time.

A useful starting point is to review whether current sums insured still reflect the value of the business, outstanding debts, each partner’s ownership share and the likely cost of disruption if a key person can no longer contribute. For many partnerships, this is where the gap between having insurance and having suitable insurance becomes clear. Tools that help estimate appropriate sums insured can support the discussion, but they should not replace tailored advice.

The broader takeaway is that genetic testing reform may improve access and confidence, but it does not remove the need for careful planning. Partners considering new or updated cover should check definitions, waiting periods, exclusions, premium structures and claims requirements before committing. Where policies are intended to protect a business agreement, specialist advice can help align insurance with the legal and financial arrangements that sit behind it.
