For domestic and home service businesses, the development is more than a compliance story.
It is a reminder that insurance is not just about having a certificate on file; it is about whether the cover, records and expectations are strong enough when a claim is lodged.

The latest concerns centre on familiar pressure points: delayed updates, unclear explanations, complaint handling and the need for insurers to meet the standards set by the General Insurance Code of Practice. While the report is aimed at insurer behaviour, small operators can take practical lessons from it. A cleaner, gardener, mobile repairer or in-home support provider may only discover a gap when a client alleges property damage, a tool is stolen, or an incident interrupts work.

If a business cannot quickly show what happened, where work was performed, what equipment was used, or which policy section should respond, the process can become slower and more stressful.

The report also highlights why regular insurance policy reviews should be treated as a normal part of business administration. Many domestic service businesses change gradually: new services are added, more expensive equipment is purchased, staff or contractors come on board, and work may extend into higher-risk properties or commercial sites. If those changes are not reflected in the policy, a claim can expose an avoidable weakness.

There is also a customer relationship angle. When a client invites a service provider into their home, they are placing trust in that operator's skill, conduct and professionalism. Being able to explain that the business has appropriate cover, maintains records and understands its claims process can support confidence before work begins. The broader message from the latest conduct reporting is clear: insurers must improve where standards fall short, but small businesses can also reduce friction by making their own insurance arrangements organised, accurate and ready to respond.
