Claims Handling Scrutiny Puts Policy Preparation in the Spotlight

Why better records and clearer cover limits can make a real difference when tradies need to claim

Claims Handling Scrutiny Puts Policy Preparation in the Spotlight?w=400

The information on this website is general in nature and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation, or needs. Consider seeking personal advice from a licensed adviser before acting on any information.

ASIC’s ongoing focus on general insurance claims handling is a timely reminder that the value of a policy is tested long after the premium is paid.
For Australian tradies, the issue is practical rather than theoretical: when a ute is damaged, tools are stolen, a workshop is hit by stormwater or a client alleges property damage, delays and documentation gaps can quickly affect cash flow.

The regulator has been pressing insurers to lift standards around communication, timeliness and fair treatment during claims. While much of the public attention often falls on home and motor claims after severe weather, the same principles matter for small trade businesses. A claim that drags on for weeks can mean hiring replacement gear, turning down jobs, covering excess costs and spending unpaid hours chasing updates.

For tradies, the first lesson is to treat claims preparation as part of business administration. That means keeping purchase receipts for tools and equipment, maintaining a current asset register, photographing higher-value items, recording serial numbers where possible and storing copies away from the vehicle or workshop. If stock, materials or portable equipment move between sites, records should show where items are usually kept and how they are secured.

The second lesson is to review cover limits before a claim exposes a shortfall. Replacement costs have shifted for many tools, plant, vehicles and building materials, so older policy limits may no longer reflect today’s prices. Underinsurance can be especially painful where a policy pays only up to a nominated amount or where sub-limits apply to tools in transit, locked vehicles, hired-in plant or temporary site storage. Estimating insurance sums insured can help business owners approach renewal with clearer figures rather than guesswork.

The third lesson is to understand the claims pathway before something goes wrong. Tradies should know who to contact, what evidence is required, whether emergency repairs need approval, and how quickly theft or malicious damage must be reported to police. It is also worth checking whether the policy wording requires specific security measures, such as locked toolboxes, alarms, immobilisers or storage conditions outside business hours.

Where the wording is difficult to interpret, speaking with an insurance broker may help clarify exclusions, excesses and evidence requirements. The broader message from regulatory scrutiny is simple: insurers need to handle claims properly, but policyholders also improve their position by keeping records, reviewing limits and acting quickly when an incident occurs.

A fresh round of transport safety coverage has put truck fires back on the risk agenda for Australian operators. While major crashes often attract the most attention, a vehicle fire can be just as disruptive for a business: the truck may be written off, the load may be damaged, a route may be blocked and the operator may lose income while replacement equipment is sourced. - read more

Recent APRA life insurance performance data has given the income protection sector a cautiously positive signal: the market appears to be moving through a more stable phase after several years of product redesign, pricing pressure and closer regulatory attention. APRA’s latest life insurance performance data has put income protection back under the spotlight, with disability income products continuing to be one of the more closely watched areas of the sector.
